Abbreviations are supposed to make our lives easier by making long words and word combinations shorter and easier to read. However, they can also give you a hard time if you see them in a text and don’t know how to decipher them.

As for the IT abbreviations, they are among the most commonly used ones. You can see them everywhere, in every situation – when you’re buying a new gadget, reading a news item or a magazine review, or even when seeing a video commercial on social media.

And as there’s no getting away from certain common IT abbreviations, the best way to avoid the inconvenience of having to always check their meaning is to have them all in one place.

The following article can be exactly such a place. Here, we’ve put together a list of the most popular IT abbreviations. You can save the article to reference it later, or you can simply learn the acronyms by heart so that you won’t have to look them up when you see them in a text.

    So, here we go.

    Hardware and Software-Related Abbreviations

Now, here’s some basic stuff that everyone needs to know. If you use your laptop for something more than an occasional “write my essay on EssayPro” request, you probably already know some of them. But in case you still don’t – you’d better learn them by heart because they are indeed very common.

    1. HDD stands for a “hard disk drive”. This is the part of your computer where all your data is stored and from where it’s retrieved when you request it. However, many new devices don’t have an HDD anymore – they have something else.

    2. SSD is that something that has replaced an HDD in modern-day devices. SSD means “Solid State Drive”, and it’s generally considered to be safer and more reliable than HDD.

    3. USB. You’ve certainly used this port a million times, but do you know what the abbreviation stands for? USB means “Universal Serial Bus”, and it’s a long time industry standard for cables and connectors and the most widely used communication interface.

    4. RAM. Do you know how much RAM your laptop has? Maybe you need more of it? Though it’s hard to understand if you don’t know what exactly RAM means. Well, it stands for “random-access memory”, and it’s one of the key characteristics of your PC or laptop as it determines how much data it can keep in its “short-term memory”.

    5. OS is an easy one – it means “operational system”, i.e. the main piece of software your computer uses.

    Internet-Related Abbreviations

The Internet is an indispensable source of information and academic help for students. Nowadays, it presents endless opportunities for self-education and collaboration. Besides, student help services like EssayPro have made studying a lot easier. But to navigate the Internet confidently, one also needs to know what certain abbreviations mean.

Here are some of the most common ones.

    1. HTTP. You see it every time you load a website, but what does it mean? HTTP stands for “HyperText Transfer Protocol” that is used to deliver all kinds of data on the World Wide Web (WWW).
    2. TCP/IP stands for “Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol”. It’s one of the basic concepts of the Internet – a networking protocol that is used to connect two computers in order to exchange data between them.
    3. DNS means “Domain Name System”. It’s yet another basic concept, and its main function is to translate domain names into IP addresses to make your computer identifiable on the Internet or in the private network.
    4. LAN is “Local Area Network”, and you probably see this abbreviation often when you use your school’s computers. LAN is a computer network that interconnects devices within a certain area like a college campus, a laboratory, or an office building.
    5. VPN is another commonly used network type – Virtual Private Network. It’s vital if online privacy and safety are your top priority as it can create a private network using a regular public Internet connection.
    6. URL means “Uniform Resource Locator” and basically means the web address – or, more exactly, a path to a specific file located on the World Wide Web.
    7. HTML. It stands for “HyperText Markup Language” and is used to create and structure web pages. HTML is something you should definitely learn if you plan to start a blog or a website as it’s the language used for literally every web page, from a paper writing service EssayPro to a personal blog to an online shop.
    8. SEO is what you’ll also need to learn if you plan to become a blogger or a copywriter which are some of the best part-time job options for students. SEO means “Search Engine Optimization” and still remains one of the most popular and powerful Internet marketing tools as it helps to improve a website’s performance and attract external traffic from search engines.

    Miscellaneous

    1. VR stands for “Virtual Reality”. This technology is getting immensely popular, particularly in education, as it helps explain some complex concepts and create an immersive experience for students.
    2. AR is “Augmented Reality” and it’s also gaining huge momentum in education. It’s somewhat similar to virtual reality but is less immersive as it only augments the “real” reality and not replaces it completely. If you don’t mind can I ask you a question?

    Wrapping Up

Abbreviations are very common in the IT industry, and they are not only used by industry professionals. Some are so popular that all regular users utilize them every day – sometimes without fully understanding their meaning.

If you don’t want to misuse these common abbreviations, learn them by heart, and you’ll save yourself lots of time because you won’t be searching for their meanings later on!
